World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

The World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) code is the first three characters in a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). It uniquely identifies the manufacturer of the vehicle.

This list determines which manufacturers/brands the CAMVAP program supports. There are some manufacturers that are supported, but a particular brand they produce is not.

If a WMI code is not in the list when a consumer enters a VIN number, they will receive an error message stating their vehicle is not supported by the program. It is important for CAMVAP to maintain and update the list and ensure only vehicles recognized by the program are recorded. That also means removing any vehicles that are no longer supported.

Using WMI to Control CAMVAP Eligibility

WMI codes are mapped to Manufacturers in order for a relationship to be established between the vehicle and the Manufacturer. Ex. 2D4 (Dodge) will be mapped to FCA Canada. Should a certain brand not be eligible for the program, for example Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. does not want Lamborghini included, the WMIs for Lamborghini should not be mapped but VW and Audi WMIs should be. It is critical that the list of WMIs be well maintained and current. More information on WMIs can be found here.
